- Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus)
Description
The Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus), often simply called the Foxface Lo, is a highly recognizable and hardy species celebrated for its unique appearance and valuable role in marine aquariums. It is characterized by its long, pointed snout that gives it a "fox-like" profile, a bright yellow body, and a striking dark mask that covers its eyes and chest.
This species is generally peaceful and is considered an excellent choice for managing nuisance algae growth, as it is a natural herbivore. A key physical trait is its defensive mechanism: the dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines are venomous. While this venom is primarily used to deter predators and is not life-threatening to humans, it can cause a painful sting and requires caution when handling the fish.
The Foxface can also exhibit a remarkable change in coloration when stressed or sleeping, shifting from its vibrant yellow to a mottled pattern of brown and white for camouflage, often referred to as its "pajama mode."
Care Information
Aquarium Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: Due to their potential adult size and active swimming nature, a minimum tank size of 125 gallons is required to ensure long-term health and comfort.
- Aquascaping: Provide a well-structured environment with plenty of live rock to create shelter and multiple hiding spots. This fish will actively graze on the rockwork throughout the day.
-
Water Parameters: This is a hardy species, but stable water quality is always essential.
- Temperature: 72°F – 78°F
- Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 s.g. (Specific Gravity)
- pH: 8.1 – 8.4
- Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH
Diet and Feeding
The Foxface Rabbitfish is a dedicated herbivore, and its diet is crucial for its health and to prevent it from damaging corals.
- Primary Diet: A variety of marine algae and vegetable matter, including dried seaweed (Nori), fresh vegetables, and spirulina-based flakes and pellets.
- Supplementation: Occasionally offer meaty foods to ensure a fully balanced diet, but their main sustenance must be plant-based.
- Feeding Frequency: They have a high metabolism and should be fed multiple times per day. Keeping them well-fed is the best way to ensure they focus on nuisance algae and ignore valuable corals.
Compatibility
- General Temperament: They are peaceful towards almost all other fish species, even relatively aggressive ones, as their venomous spines deter potential threats. They are an excellent community fish.
- With Other Rabbitfish: They should not be housed with other Rabbitfish unless they are a confirmed mated pair or are introduced simultaneously into a very large aquarium. They can be aggressive towards members of their own species or genus.
-
Reef Safety: The Foxface is generally considered reef-safe with caution. When adequately fed, they will focus on hair and bubble algae. However, if food is scarce, they may develop a taste for and begin to nip at the polyps of LPS (Large Polyp Stony) and soft corals.
