- Gold Spotted Rabbitfish (Siganus punctatus)
Description
The Gold Spotted Rabbitfish (Siganus punctatus), sometimes called the Gold Spotted Spinefoot, is a visually appealing and substantial marine herbivore. Its body is typically a tan to brown color, lavishly decorated with a dense pattern of bright golden to orange spots that extend across its fins and face. This intricate spotting acts as excellent camouflage in its natural reef environment.
Like all Rabbitfish, it is a fantastic utility fish for the aquarium, excelling at controlling nuisance algae, including hair and bubble algae. They possess a peaceful temperament and can be kept in pairs, making them a beautiful and beneficial addition to larger marine systems. Hobbyists should be mindful of its key defense mechanism: all dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines are venomous. While not deadly, a sting can cause significant pain and requires careful handling.
Care Information
Aquarium Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: Given its potential to reach up to one foot in length, a minimum tank size of 180 gallons is necessary to accommodate its active nature and provide sufficient space for swimming and grazing.
- Aquascaping: The tank should include a substantial amount of live rock to facilitate natural grazing behaviors and offer multiple secure hiding places where the fish can retreat, especially when first introduced.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72°F – 78°F
- Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 s.g. (Specific Gravity)
- pH: 8.1 – 8.4
- Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH
Diet and Feeding
The Gold Spotted Rabbitfish is a strict herbivore, and a constant supply of vegetable matter is critical for its health.
- Primary Diet: A diverse range of fresh and dried marine algae is essential. Offer dried seaweed (Nori) on a veggie clip regularly, along with quality spirulina-based pellets and flakes.
- Algae Control: This species is highly valued for its willingness to consume various forms of nuisance algae, including the dreaded bubble algae.
- Feeding Goal: Keep the fish well-fed with plant matter to reduce the risk of it nipping at corals in the display tank.
Compatibility
- General Temperament: This is a peaceful fish that coexists well with a wide variety of non-conspecific tank mates, even more aggressive fish, thanks to its defensive spines.
- Group Housing: Unlike many Rabbitfish, Siganus punctatus can often be kept in compatible pairs, provided the tank is sufficiently large.'
-
Reef Safety: They are reef-safe with caution. If their herbivorous dietary needs are not fully met, they may begin to pick at and consume the polyps of large polyp stony (LPS) and soft corals. A well-fed Rabbitfish is the best defense against coral nipping.
