- Golden Pufferfish (Arothron meleagris)
Description
The Golden Pufferfish, sometimes referred to as the Spotted Puffer or Guinea Fowl Puffer, is a highly desirable and exceptionally intelligent marine fish. This species is notable for having multiple distinct color phases throughout its life, though it rarely changes phase once established in an aquarium.
Appearance:
- Golden Phase: The most sought-after phase, where the fish is a vibrant, solid yellow.
- Spotted Phase: The more common coloration, where the fish is deep blue, black, or gray, covered entirely in small white or iridescent spots.
- Mottled Phase: A blend of the other two, displaying patches of yellow alongside the dark, spotted pattern.
Unique Characteristics:
As a member of the Arothron genus (Fat or Dogface Puffers), it is characterized by its blunt face and lack of pelvic fins, relying on its pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins for maneuvering. Its main defense mechanism is its ability to inflate its body with water when startled or threatened. Instead of typical teeth, the Golden Puffer has a powerful, fused, beak-like structure that continuously grows and is used for crushing hard-shelled prey. These fish develop strong personalities and often recognize and interact with their owners, making them engaging "pet fish."

Aquarium Requirements
- Tank Size & Setup: Given their potential adult size and active nature, a minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended. The aquarium should be a Fish-Only setup, ideally with live rock (FOWLR). Provide ample open swimming space, along with plenty of rockwork, caves, and crevices for security and hiding, especially when newly introduced.
- Compatibility: While generally peaceful, Golden Puffers are powerful fish that can be aggressive or boisterous during feeding. They are best housed with other robust, semi-aggressive fish that can handle themselves. Caution should be used when adding smaller, timid, or slow-moving fish.
- Reef Safety: This species is not reef safe. Its natural diet includes hard-shelled invertebrates, and it will quickly destroy and consume ornamental snails, crabs, shrimp, and other sessile inverts found in a reef tank.
Water Parameters
Stable and pristine water quality is essential for the health of all puffers.
| Parameter | Recommended Range |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 72–78° F |
| Specific Gravity (Salinity) | 1.020–1.025 |
| pH | 8.1–8.4 |
| Alkalinity (dKH) | 8–12 dKH |
Feeding and Diet
- Dietary Needs: The Golden Puffer is a carnivore that requires a varied diet of meaty foods.
- Beak Maintenance: To prevent their constantly growing beak from becoming overgrown (which can impede feeding), it is crucial to offer hard-shelled food items frequently.
-
Recommended Foods:
- Hard-shelled shrimp (with the shell intact)
- Clams, mussels, and scallops
- Squid and krill
- Quality frozen foods and pellets suitable for marine carnivores
