- Hooded Flame Male Fairy Wrasse
Description
The Hooded Flame Fairy Wrasse is one of the most highly coveted and visually spectacular members of the Cirrhilabrus genus, often collected from deep-water environments. The male, which displays the most intense coloration, is a breathtaking combination of deep rose, red, and orange across its body. Its distinctive feature, from which it gets its name, is the "hood" or "cap" of color on its head, which can flash with brilliant intensity during courtship displays. Males typically feature a yellow belly and may have striking black or purple-black edging along the dorsal and caudal (tail) fins, contrasting sharply with the main body color.
These fish are peaceful, active, and an excellent choice for a well-maintained reef or fish-only system. Like all Fairy Wrasses, this species is known to be a "jumper," necessitating a secure, tight-fitting lid on the aquarium. Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning all individuals start life as females, and the largest, dominant female in a group will eventually transition into a fully colored terminal male.
Care and Aquarium Information
Aquarium Environment
- Tank Setup: Provide an established aquarium with ample live rock. The rockwork should create many crevices, caves, and sheltered spots where the wrasse can retreat and feel secure, especially when resting or initially acclimating.
- Cover: A tight-fitting lid or canopy is mandatory, as all Fairy Wrasses are known to jump when startled or stressed.
- Substrate: Wrasses in the genus Cirrhilabrus do not bury in the sand to sleep, so a deep sand bed is not required for their safety.
Diet and Feeding
- Feeding: This species is a carnivore that requires a diet rich in high-quality, meaty marine preparations.
- Food Types: Offer a varied diet of enriched frozen foods, such as Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, lobster eggs, and other finely chopped marine meats. They will also graze on micro-invertebrates (pods) found in the live rock.
- Frequency: Feed small portions frequently throughout the day to support their active metabolism.
Temperament and Compatibility
- Reef Safe: This is considered a reef-safe wrasse and typically will not harm corals, clams, or sessile invertebrates. They may, however, occasionally prey on tiny, ornamental crustaceans.
- Social: The Hooded Flame Fairy Wrasse is peaceful and pairs well with other peaceful reef fish.
- Group Housing: If keeping more than one, they are best maintained in a harem structure: one male with several females. Introducing the female(s) first, or all fish simultaneously, is recommended. Introducing a new, smaller male to an established male is likely to result in aggression.
- Sex Change: All individuals are born female and may change sex to male as they mature or become the dominant fish in a group.
