Description

The Magnificent Rabbitfish (Siganus magnificus), also known as the Red Fin Foxface or Andaman Foxface, is one of the most dramatically patterned and sought-after species within the Rabbitfish family. This fish boasts a unique and striking tri-color pattern: its body is sharply divided, with a white to pale yellow front half and a dark brown to nearly black rear half. A bold, vertical black band runs through the eye, giving it a distinctive masked appearance. The fins are brilliantly accented with yellow or a fiery red trim, especially the caudal (tail) fin, which gives it its "Red Fin" common name.

Like its relatives, this species is a highly beneficial herbivore, valued for its appetite for nuisance algae in the aquarium. It is a very peaceful fish towards nearly all other species, making it a good addition to a community tank. However, caution is required, as its dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines contain a mild but painful venom, which serves as its primary defense against predators.

Care Information

Aquarium Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: A tank of 125 gallons or larger is recommended. This species is active and will graze frequently, requiring ample swimming room and stable water volume to thrive.
  • Aquascaping: The environment should be rich in live rock to provide extensive surfaces for grazing algae, as well as multiple caves and crevices for shelter. They will use these hiding spots when resting or feeling threatened.
  • Water Parameters: As a relatively hardy fish, maintaining stable parameters is key:
    • Temperature: 72°F – 78°F
    • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 s.g. (Specific Gravity)
    • pH: 8.1 – 8.4
    • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Diet and Feeding

The Magnificent Rabbitfish is a crucial herbivore and must have a constant supply of plant matter to maintain health and prevent destructive behavior in the reef.

  • Primary Diet: Its main diet should consist of a variety of high-quality vegetable matter, including fresh macroalgae, dried marine seaweed (Nori) offered via a clip, and spirulina-enhanced flakes or pellets.
  • Supplementation: Occasionally accept meaty foods, but these should only supplement the plant-based diet.
  • Feeding Goal: Consistent, adequate feeding is essential to satisfy its grazing instinct and reduce the likelihood of it nipping at corals.

Compatibility

  • General Temperament: This fish is peaceful and can be safely kept with most non-Rabbitfish species, even those that are moderately aggressive, as the venomous spines serve as an effective deterrent.
  • With Other Rabbitfish: Like most members of the Siganus genus, it is territorial towards its own kind and should generally be housed as a single specimen per tank, unless introduced as a known, established pair in a very large aquarium.
  • Reef Safety: Considered reef-safe with caution. While excellent at controlling undesirable algae, if not sufficiently fed, they may begin to sample and consume polyps from soft corals and LPS (Large Polyp Stony) corals.
